SUMMARY:Norway in the 21st Century Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Photo courtesy of Dr. Pål Brekke \nNorway in the 21st Century Luncheon\nwith Norwegian Solar Physicist Pål Brekke April 21 at 12 PM \nSeasons 52 Fresh Grill at Tysons Corner Center\, McLean\, VA \nRSVP below by April 17 (limited spots) \nPrice: $34 for members\, $39 for non-members/guests \nThe Beautiful Northern Lights and the Dangerous Space Weather\nWhat is more beautiful on a cold winter’s night than catching a glimpse of the northern lights or “aurora borealis” dancing across the sky? This stunning phenomenon is deeply embedded in the mythology of many cultures. A little more than a hundred years ago\, an eccentric Norwegian scientist\, Kristian Birkeland\, realized that the sun bombards the Earth with particles creating the aurora. Today we observe the sun from satellites and can predict the Northern lights. However\, solar storms can also create havoc on our ever-increasing technology-based society. Just recently\, a solar storm knocked down 40 of the SpaceX’ Starling satellites. \nDr. Brekke will take the audience through the history of this phenomenon from ancient times to modern space-based science. He will also show pictures from his recent visit to Svalbard where the world largest optical aurora observatory is located and where NASA launches rockets into the daytime aurora. \nThe lecture will include clips from the award-winning documentary «The Northern Lights – a Magic Experience» as well as new stunning real time video of the Northern Lights. The best places to experience the aurora will be revealed. \nSeasons 52 is conveniently located in Tysons Corner Mall on the lower level. There is ample parking\, and the location is accessible by metro (Silver Line). Here is a link to their website where you will find the address and directions: https://www.seasons52.com/locations/va/mclean/mclean-tysons-corner/4515 \nIncluded in the price is one out of three entrees\, Mini Indulgence Desserts\, Coffee\, Tea (iced)\, and soft drinks. Please pick one the options when you RSVP.\n \n \n \n REGISTER \n \n \n \nDeadline: Register by Sunday\, April 17\, 2022

SUMMARY:Virtual Norway in the 21st Century Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Virtual Norway in the 21st Century Luncheon\nThursday\, June 3\, 2021  at noon/1200\nwith Norwegian Solar Physicist Dr. Pål Brekke \nWe have the great pleasure of having renowned Solar Physicist\nPål Brekke join us from Norway on June 3 to give a talk entitled:\nNorway – a Small but Significant Space Nation (on top of the world).\nThere will be a short Q&A after his presentation. \nPlease RSVP using the form below to secure your spot! \n\nHere is short abstract of the talk that Dr. Brekke sent to us: \nNorway is leading the way in many space activities. We have long traditions in Aurora research since the innovative inventor and scientist Kristian Birkeland was the first to explain the phenomena in 1897. It was charged particles from the sun that sparked the northern lights. His legacy\, as the world’s first space scientist\, triggered an increased interest for solar physics – and today Norway has one of the best and biggest solar research groups in the world. \nDeveloping sophisticated space instrumentation is another field where Norway paves the way. We were one of the first countries to launch a ship detection system into space tracking over 40.000 ships every day. The system has been installed on the International space station and is flying on several satellites – and it has saved lives as well as discovered illegal fishing and smuggling.  One of the seven instruments on the NASA rover Perseverance is the Norwegian ground penetrating radar RIMFAX which can look several meters below the Martian surface. We have the world’s largest satellite stations located at Svalbard – which is also one of NASA and NOAAs most important ground stations to feed scientific and weather data to USA. \nAbout Dr. Brekke: \nDr. Brekke is a solar physicist\, expert on the northern lights and an international recognized lecturer. He currently he works as Lead Space Science at the Norwegian Space Agency. Previously he worked for six years at NASA Goddard Space Flights Center as the Deputy Project Scientist for the legendary sun-observing satellite SOHO. He received a Fulbright Fellowship in 1994\, ESA’s Exceptional Achievement Award in 2002\, and Laurels for Team Achievements from the International Academy of Astronautics in 2003. He is a Norwegian delegate to several European Space Agency Program Boards and also a Prof. II at the University Center at Svalbard (UNIS). Dr. Brekke is also the author of several international popular science books about the Sun and the Northern Lights translated into seven languages. He has recently produced the award-winning documentary «The Northern Lights – a Magic Experience. He is also a member of the exclusive Explorers Club in New York.

SUMMARY:Norway in the 21st Century Luncheon
DESCRIPTION:Please join Norwegian Society of Washington\, D.C. for lunch on Friday\, January 11\, 2019 Noon-2 pm \nSeasons 52 Fresh Grill at Tysons Corner Center\nLower level\, near Barnes & Noble. Free parking or valet.\nMetro accessible by Silver Line Tysons Corner\n7863L Tysons Corner Center\, Mc Lean\, VA 22102\, Ph. (703) 288-3852 \n  \nMs. Pamela Banks – “Mission to Rjukan and the Race for the Atomic Bomb” \n  \n We will gather at our new venue Seasons 52 at Tysons Corner in McLean at 12:00/noon. Lunch will be served shortly after our arrival followed by a short introduction by 21st Century Luncheon Director Sigurd Neubauer and Ms. Banks’ talk. Parking is free\, but there is also a valet service available on the lower level. If you come by metro\, take the Silver Line towards Wiehle/Reston to the Tysons Corner station. \nPamela Banks’ family members served in the United States Army during World War II and their lives were profoundly impacted by the race to build an atomic bomb. One life was lost and another life was saved by President Roosevelt’s decision to develop experimental nuclear weapons and by President Truman’s decision to deploy them on Japan ending the war in the Pacific. The full story of their military service was discovered in 2010 when Pamela began clearing out the attic of her family home to move to Leesburg\, Virginia. She opened a wooden box containing pictures\, letters\, and documents that had been hidden for more than five decades and eventually learned why her uncle’s remains rest in Norway. \nPrior to moving to Virginia\, Pamela lived in both New York and New Jersey. She is currently a volunteer at the George C. Marshall International Center in Leesburg.  Following an extensive corporate career in human resources and organizational change\, she became a career transitions coach and an independent consultant. Pamela graduated from Columbia University with a Master’s Degree in Organizational Psychology and was trained as a business negotiations coach at the Program on Negotiation at the Harvard Law School.\n \n \n \n REGISTER \n \n \n \nDeadline: Register by end of business Tuesday\, January 8\, 2019

SUMMARY:NORDIC IMPRESSIONS - Private Tour
DESCRIPTION:  \nNils Dardel The Dying Dandy (1918) Oil on canvas\, 55 1/8 x 70 7/8 in.\, Moderna Museet\, Stockholm \nNORDIC IMPRESSIONS features Art from Åland\, Denmark\, the Faroe Islands\, Finland\, Greenland\, Iceland\, Norway\, and Sweden\, from 1821–2018. \nNorwegian Society members have been invited to a private tour of the exhibition on Friday\, November 16 at 11:30 AM. There are limited spots\, so please contact us soon to secure yours. Send an email to nosodc@gmail.com with your name and number of people in your party – first come\, first serve! \nSome of us may go for lunch after the tour\, and you are welcome to join us. A confirmation email will reach you as soon as you have signed up and additional details will be sent to you.\nNordic Impressions is a major survey of Nordic art spanning nearly 200 years and presenting 53 artists from Denmark\, Iceland\, Finland\, Norway\, and Sweden\, as well as the self-governing islands of Åland\,Faroe\, and Greenland. \nThe exhibition celebrates the incredible artistic diversity of Nordic art\, from idealized paintings of the distinctive Nordic light and untouched landscape to melancholic portraits in quiet interiors and mesmerizing video works that explore the human condition. While the question of what constitutes a distinctively Nordic art has been a constant debate\, the art in the exhibition retains a certain mystique and focus on themes that have held a special place in Nordic culture for centuries: light and darkness\, inner life and exterior space\, the coalescence of nature and folklore\, and women’s rights and social liberalism.\n

SUMMARY:Norwegian Dinner/Norsk middag
DESCRIPTION:COME DINE WITH US/NORSK MIDDAG \n \n \n	Please join Norwegian Society for an authentic Norwegian meal on October 22! \n \nNorwegian fårikål courtesy of www.farikal.no \nGive yourself a break on Sunday\, October 22\, bring your family and friends\, and we well do the cooking! \nOn the menu\, you will find homemade Norwegian fårikål (lamb and cabbage) as well as homemade kjøttkaker (Norwegian style meatballs). \nIn an opinion poll in Norway 40 years ago\, fårikål was ranked as Norway’s favorite national dish. A few years back\, another opinion poll showed that it is still deemed the National Dish of Norway. The dish even has its own day: “Fårikålens dag”. It is celebrated nationwide on the last Thursday in September. \nFor a good recipe\, we would recommend that you visit “Fårikålens venner” www.farikal.no \n \nNorske kjøttkaker courtesy of www.matprat.no \nNorske kjøttkaker has a long tradition on Norwegian dinner tables – a sure winner with all ages. It is usually served with boiled potatoes\, ertestuing (mashed peas)\, kålstuing (cabbage in white sauce)\, or surkål (Norwegian style sauerkraut). Tyttebærsyltetøy (cranberry preserves) are also a must. Kjøttkaker came in a good second in both opinion polls mentioned above. \nWe will also serve Norwegian cake and coffee for dessert\, as well as water\, juice and soda with the main dishes. \nOur special guest this evening will be Sabine Farrar of Viking Walks who will tell us about her recent trip to Norway when she walked along the pilgrim path. \nOur guest speaker Sabine Farrar will talk to us right after we have enjoyed our Norwegian meal. \nHere is some information she sent to us to share with you. \n \nSabine on Pilegrimsleden \nViking Walks presents: St. Olav Way – A walk along the historic pilgrim path in Norway \nThe St. Olav Way (Pilegrimsleden) is a network of pilgrim paths leading from many directions to the St. Olav shrine in Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. In May 2010 these pilgrim paths were declared European Cultural Routes by the Council of Europe. \nIn my presentation\, I will take you on a journey along the Gudbrandsdalen path of the St. Olav Ways. The path begins in Oslo and ends about 400 miles (650 km) north at the Nidaros Cathedral in Trondheim. The walk along this ancient route is a unique journey through nature\, culture\, and history. For many\, it is also a spiritual experience. \n \nSabine’s group on Pilegrimsleden this summer. \nSince 2014 I have walked several pilgrimages on the St. Olav Way\, and walked the entire Gudbrandsdalen path from Oslo to Trondheim (650 km/400 miles) twice. I have also guided and co-guided groups three times on different stretches of the St. Olav Way. \nIn 2016 I founded Viking Walks\, LLC\, which offers extended guided group pilgrimages and walks along the St. Olav Ways in cooperation with my Norwegian business partner Kari from Camino Walks of Norway. This July\, we guided a 15-day group pilgrimage with 11 international participants along the scenic Gudbrandsdalen path from Dovre-Trondheim (150 mi/250km). \nPersonal Background: I was born in Germany\, where I also received my elementary\, high school\, and university education (M.Ed. for Physical Education and Geography). In 2002 my husband and I moved to the United States for professional reasons. Since 2005\, I have taught in independent schools in Washington\, D.C. and Maryland. For the past 11 years\,   I have been a Physical Education teacher and coach at Norwood School\, an independent PreK-8 School in Bethesda\, Maryland.  Since my first walk on the St. Olav Way in 2014\, I have developed a true love for Norway and a passion for walking and guiding groups on the St. Olav Ways. \nMore information: www.vikingwalks.com or contact Sabine directly at sfarrar@vikingwalks.com\n \n \n \n REGISTER
