DESCRIPTION:Join us for Norsk Networking Happy Hour August 25 at 5 PM at the Perch\, Tysons Corner \nWelcome back\, everyone\, to our first IN-PERSON Norsk Networking Happy Hour in a VERY long time. We have recently had several in-person events\, and we are excited to invite you to our next NNHH.\nWe will be gathering at the Starr Hill Brewery in Tysons Corner on August 25th at 5 pm. This venue is also commonly known as the Tysons Biergarten because of its amazing location – the rooftop at Capital One Center: The Perch.\nPlease keep in mind that this location is predominantly outdoors. There is plenty of cover and shade but remember to dress accordingly. They have a full menu of Biergarten-inspired food and a large list of their own brews. Also\, on location are plenty of areas to spread out and enjoy some of their outdoor games. Leashed pets are welcome in the patio area and in the dog park. DESCRIPTION:Norwegian Society Annual Sankthans Picnic\nCome Celebrate Sankthans/Midsummer Eve at the Staalesen Farm in Frederick\, MD on Saturday\, June 25 from 5 PM to dusk \nThere is no cost involved\, but please RSVP below with the number of people in your party. The address will be sent to you after you sign up. \nLast year\, everybody brought their own picnic\, so we will ask you to do the same this year. Norwegian Society will provide water\, coffee\, and a delectable Norwegian marsipanbløtekake for dessert\, but please bring your own main dish and/or sandwiches as well as any other beverages you wish to consume. \nSome seating will be available\, but it would be great if you could bring your own chairs/picnic blanket. \nMany of you have been to the Staalesen Farm before and know they have plenty of outdoor space for everyone\, including room for children’s games. There is also a large open building where people may go in if the weather should be unstable. The traditional bonfire will be lit at dusk. \nWe look forward to seeing you there!

This stunning phenomenon is deeply embedded in the mythology of many cultures. A little more than a hundred years ago\, an eccentric Norwegian scientist\, Kristian Birkeland\, realized that the sun bombards the Earth with particles creating the aurora. Today we observe the sun from satellites and can predict the Northern lights. However\, solar storms can also create havoc on our ever-increasing technology-based society. Just recently\, a solar storm knocked down 40 of the SpaceX’ Starling satellites. \nDr. Brekke will take the audience through the history of this phenomenon from ancient times to modern space-based science. He will also show pictures from his recent visit to Svalbard where the world largest optical aurora observatory is located and where NASA launches rockets into the daytime aurora. \nThe lecture will include clips from the award-winning documentary «The Northern Lights – a Magic Experience» as well as new stunning real time video of the Northern Lights. The best places to experience the aurora will be revealed. \nSeasons 52 is conveniently located in Tysons Corner Mall on the lower level. DESCRIPTION:Join us for Virtual Norway in the 21st Century Luncheon on December 6 at noon to 1 PM.  \n“Gustav Vigeland – the Man and the Artist”\n  \n \nOn December 6 from noon to 1 PM\, we will be joined by the Director of the Vigeland Museum in Oslo Jarle Strømodden. Mr. Strømodden will give a talk on Gustav Vigeland\, the famous Norwegian sculptor who created all the sculptures in the Vigeland Park in Oslo\, which I am sure many of you have visited. \nDirector Strømodden will talk briefly about Vigeland’s formative years and his early years in Oslo. He will then comment on Vigeland’s travels\, with an emphasis on the trips in the 1890s. He will also talk about three important monuments which were unveiled in 1908 and 1911 in Oslo\, as well as the agreement between Vigeland and the City of Oslo which built a studio for him. Vigeland’s studio later became the Vigeland Museum. The park\, as we know it today\, was not initially a part of this agreement. After the talk\, there will be time for a brief Q&A. \nMr. Strømodden has an MA in Art History from the University of Oslo (1995). He has been the Director of the Vigeland Museum since January 1\, 2006. Previously\, Mr. Strømodden was the Director of Tromsø Kunstforening\, and he has also held the position as Assistant Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo (now part of the National Museum). \nMake sure to secure your spot by signing up online by December 3. DESCRIPTION:GUDSTJENESTE/CHURCH SERVICE on October 10 at 3 PM \nPlease join us for the in-person service/gudstjeneste on Sunday\, October 10 at 3 PM in Emmanuel Lutheran Church. On this Sunday\, you will have the chance to meet the new pastors from the Seaman’s Church in New York\, Jofrid Landa and Geir Øy. Jofrid will be our pastor here in DC. \nWe are so excited to be back in church worshipping together in person\, but this also requires a few adjustments to our normal church service. \nMasks are to be worn at all times inside the church. Social distancing is also being observed by one-way directions in and out of the sanctuary as well as every other pew being blocked. Families can sit together. Communion is offered by using single communion cups containing both the bread and the wine.  Everyone can pick up an agenda and a communion cup in the foyer on the way into the sanctuary. \nDue to local restrictions on serving food indoors\, there will be no coffee hour as all food served needs to be individually sealed. However\, we can congregate outside the church after the service and enjoy some coffee and cake if weather allows. \nVelkommen til gudstjeneste!

DESCRIPTION:Virtual Norway in the 21st Century Luncheon\nThursday\, June 3\, 2021  at noon/1200\nwith Norwegian Solar Physicist Dr. Pål Brekke \nWe have the great pleasure of having renowned Solar Physicist\nPål Brekke join us from Norway on June 3 to give a talk entitled:\nNorway – a Small but Significant Space Nation (on top of the world).\nThere will be a short Q&A after his presentation. \nPlease RSVP using the form below to secure your spot! \n\nHere is short abstract of the talk that Dr. Brekke sent to us: \nNorway is leading the way in many space activities. We have long traditions in Aurora research since the innovative inventor and scientist Kristian Birkeland was the first to explain the phenomena in 1897. It was charged particles from the sun that sparked the northern lights. His legacy\, as the world’s first space scientist\, triggered an increased interest for solar physics – and today Norway has one of the best and biggest solar research groups in the world. \nDeveloping sophisticated space instrumentation is another field where Norway paves the way. We were one of the first countries to launch a ship detection system into space tracking over 40.000 ships every day. The system has been installed on the International space station and is flying on several satellites – and it has saved lives as well as discovered illegal fishing and smuggling.  One of the seven instruments on the NASA rover Perseverance is the Norwegian ground penetrating radar RIMFAX which can look several meters below the Martian surface. We have the world’s largest satellite stations located at Svalbard – which is also one of NASA and NOAAs most important ground stations to feed scientific and weather data to USA. \nAbout Dr. Brekke: \nDr. Brekke is a solar physicist\, expert on the northern lights and an international recognized lecturer. He currently he works as Lead Space Science at the Norwegian Space Agency. Previously he worked for six years at NASA Goddard Space Flights Center as the Deputy Project Scientist for the legendary sun-observing satellite SOHO. He received a Fulbright Fellowship in 1994\, ESA’s Exceptional Achievement Award in 2002\, and Laurels for Team Achievements from the International Academy of Astronautics in 2003. He is a Norwegian delegate to several European Space Agency Program Boards and also a Prof. II at the University Center at Svalbard (UNIS). Dr. Brekke is also the author of several international popular science books about the Sun and the Northern Lights translated into seven languages. He has recently produced the award-winning documentary «The Northern Lights – a Magic Experience. He is also a member of the exclusive Explorers Club in New York.
