DESCRIPTION:Join us for Virtual Norway in the 21st Century Luncheon on December 6 at noon to 1 PM.  \n“Gustav Vigeland – the Man and the Artist”\n  \n \nOn December 6 from noon to 1 PM\, we will be joined by the Director of the Vigeland Museum in Oslo Jarle Strømodden. Mr. Strømodden will give a talk on Gustav Vigeland\, the famous Norwegian sculptor who created all the sculptures in the Vigeland Park in Oslo\, which I am sure many of you have visited. \nDirector Strømodden will talk briefly about Vigeland’s formative years and his early years in Oslo. He will then comment on Vigeland’s travels\, with an emphasis on the trips in the 1890s. He will also talk about three important monuments which were unveiled in 1908 and 1911 in Oslo\, as well as the agreement between Vigeland and the City of Oslo which built a studio for him. Vigeland’s studio later became the Vigeland Museum. The park\, as we know it today\, was not initially a part of this agreement. After the talk\, there will be time for a brief Q&A. \nMr. Strømodden has an MA in Art History from the University of Oslo (1995). He has been the Director of the Vigeland Museum since January 1\, 2006. Previously\, Mr. Strømodden was the Director of Tromsø Kunstforening\, and he has also held the position as Assistant Curator at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Oslo (now part of the National Museum). \nMake sure to secure your spot by signing up online by December 3. DESCRIPTION:Virtual Norway in the 21st Century Luncheon\nThursday\, June 3\, 2021  at noon/1200\nwith Norwegian Solar Physicist Dr. Pål Brekke \nWe have the great pleasure of having renowned Solar Physicist\nPål Brekke join us from Norway on June 3 to give a talk entitled:\nNorway – a Small but Significant Space Nation (on top of the world).\nThere will be a short Q&A after his presentation. \nPlease RSVP using the form below to secure your spot! \n\nHere is short abstract of the talk that Dr. Brekke sent to us: \nNorway is leading the way in many space activities. We have long traditions in Aurora research since the innovative inventor and scientist Kristian Birkeland was the first to explain the phenomena in 1897. It was charged particles from the sun that sparked the northern lights. His legacy\, as the world’s first space scientist\, triggered an increased interest for solar physics – and today Norway has one of the best and biggest solar research groups in the world. \nDeveloping sophisticated space instrumentation is another field where Norway paves the way. We were one of the first countries to launch a ship detection system into space tracking over 40.000 ships every day. The system has been installed on the International space station and is flying on several satellites – and it has saved lives as well as discovered illegal fishing and smuggling.  One of the seven instruments on the NASA rover Perseverance is the Norwegian ground penetrating radar RIMFAX which can look several meters below the Martian surface. We have the world’s largest satellite stations located at Svalbard – which is also one of NASA and NOAAs most important ground stations to feed scientific and weather data to USA. \nAbout Dr. Brekke: \nDr. Brekke is a solar physicist\, expert on the northern lights and an international recognized lecturer. He currently he works as Lead Space Science at the Norwegian Space Agency. Previously he worked for six years at NASA Goddard Space Flights Center as the Deputy Project Scientist for the legendary sun-observing satellite SOHO. He received a Fulbright Fellowship in 1994\, ESA’s Exceptional Achievement Award in 2002\, and Laurels for Team Achievements from the International Academy of Astronautics in 2003. He is a Norwegian delegate to several European Space Agency Program Boards and also a Prof. II at the University Center at Svalbard (UNIS). Dr. Brekke is also the author of several international popular science books about the Sun and the Northern Lights translated into seven languages. He has recently produced the award-winning documentary «The Northern Lights – a Magic Experience. He is also a member of the exclusive Explorers Club in New York.

Photo: NRK \nPlease join us on November 21 at 2 PM to celebrate and commemorate the 75th Anniversary of the Norwegian Liberation! \nMay 8\, 1945 saw the end of Nazi occupation and the beginning of a new era in Norway. Norwegian Society and Church Service Washington DC\, Norwegian American Chamber of Commerce Mid-Atlantic\, and Sons of Norway Washington Lodge will be hosting a special Zoom remembrance on Saturday\, November 21\, 2020\, at 2 PM (EST). We will celebrate this important event and acknowledge the courage and sacrifices of Norwegians – especially our local members and their relatives – who were in Norway during this difficult time. \n  \nDave Brown\, President of Sons of Norway Washington Lodge\, will give the opening remarks.  Wally Jensen\, Pastor of the Norwegian Church Service\, will give the invocation. Chloe Friberg\, General Manager of NACC MA\, will introduce our main speaker Colonel Håvard Klevberg\, Air Attaché and Assistant Defense Attaché at the Royal Norwegian Embassy.  Award-winning Author Janet Oakley will give a short presentation on Norway during the war.  Members will present their stories of the occupation and remember their relatives who lived during the period. Lasse Syversen\, President of the Norwegian Society and Church Service\, will give the concluding remarks. The formal program will be followed by small group chat sessions. \nZoom details have been sent to our members by e-mail. Guests are welcome\, but will need to contact us to receive the details. \n

Please register in advance below. \nWe ask that you register on our website prior to the service so we can send you the agenda and the zoom link for access to the service. \nThe upcoming service on October 11 at 3 pm will be celebrated with HØSTTAKKEFEST (Thanksgiving). If we had held the service in person\, we would have the children carry vegetables to the altar during the procession. In the spirit of that we would ask you to bring a vegetable to the zoom meeting to set the tone. Another thing we can share with each other after the service during our social hour is LAPPER (pancakes). Vigdis Syversen\, our Social Chair\, has shared a recipe you can use to make these. \nLAPPER (makes around 30) \n4 dl white flour (just short of 1 and 3/4 cups) \n3 dl milk (about 1 and 1/4 cups) \n5 eggs \n2.5 tablespoons granulated sugar \n3 tablespoons butter \n0.5 teaspoon salt \n1 teaspoon baking soda \n\nHow to make them: \nMelt the butter and mix all the ingredients into an even batter. Let it swell for 15 min. \nFry the “lapp” in a heated frying pan with butter or oil\, one minute on each side. \nUse a ladle and make them around 10 cm in diameter. \nServe cooled with some jam or fresh berries. Freshly made “lapper” is always popular\, for breakfast\, lunch or supper\, with guests – or even without.  ENJOY!

DESCRIPTION:Join us for our Virtual Annual Meeting on October 10\, 2020 at 4 PM! \nWe will start off with a Cocktail hour and then we will conduct our yearly business. Our president will give his annual report\, and we will approve the financial reports and budget for next year\, as well as the new board members for 2021. \nPlease register below for the Zoom meeting and the meeting details will be sent to you by email a day or two in advance. \n  \n \nHere is a little bit of information about the Virtual Cocktail Hour: \nBecause 2020 is so unique\, we wanted to do things a little differently this year. We will start off Cocktail Hour where we will be joined by mixologist and previous restaurant owner\, Mathew Gries. He has created a special cocktail just for us and will also be teaching us how to make it! The cocktail he has created is called the Lingonberry Sour and uses a wonderful mix of Aquavit\, Elderflower\, and (of course) Lingonberry. If you would like to participate in making the cocktail with us\, below are the ingredients and the measurements needed: \nLingonberry Sour \n\n2oz Aquavit (this can now easily be found here in the states at your local liquor store…but you can also substitute this with Vodka)\n1oz Fresh Lemon Juice\n1/2 oz Simple Syrup\n1/2oz St Germain Elderflower Liqueur\n2tsp Lingonberry Jam\nGarnish with a Lemon Peel or 3 Lingonberries\n\nWe look forward to seeing you all at the Annual Meeting and having a little fun with Mat!
